OCR: ROBOTS MARTIAN ROVERS Martian rovers ROBOTS IN FILM Much research has been conducted since the 1970s toward developing a Martian vehicle. The Viking space probes had immobile landers that could only study the Martian surface within a few meters of their landing sites. The more advanced mobile rovers will be landed on Mars before the first manned mission and allow detailed exploration. Mobility is essential to Mars research, particularly for seeking specific soil or rock samples that may be hidden behind large boulders or beyond crevasses. We should remember that one reason the Apollo Moon missions were so successful was that the astronauts were able to explore the lunar surface in their open rover. Similarly, the Soviet Moon missions used 700-kilo, eight-wheeled Lunokhods- controlled from Earth and equipped with stereoscopic cameras-capable of traveling 35 kilometers over the lunar surface.
